Article Date:10/6/14
Who:Jennifer haberkorn
Where:Texas
When: In Texas
What happened:Texas wants the Supreme Court to let go of some of the restrictions on abortions because it has been an emergency it seems to be a serious issue the reproductive right for women association got involved
Why this event is relevant: because even though I disapprove of abortions they are sometimes necessary to happen
Reaction :I'm surprised that Texas has a non abortion law what made them get this law was their a vote
Opinion (I think..)I think text should really consider letting abortions happen
Connection (why you chose this article)because again although I am against abortions in the case of rape abortions should be allowed and the fact that Texas just doesn't want them explains a lot maybe abortions are really bad

ReplyDeleteArticle Title: Florida Man Gets Life in Prison in Fatal Dispute Over Music
Article Date: October 17, 2014
Who: Michael Dunn
Where:Miami Florida
When: November 2012
What happened: A man who was found guilty of premeitated murder in the 2012 shooting of an unarmed teenager during a dispute over loud music was sentenced on friday to life in prison without parole. At the end of the emotional hearing in jacksonville, Michael Dunn, who was convicted of the murder, read an apology letter to the parents of jordan davis, the 17 year old, who was shot three times as he sat in a parked car with friends. Mr.Dunn, who testified during the trial, told the jury he shot the teen because, he was aiming a shotgun at him. But no gun was ever found by the police or seen by witnesses. The murder occurred in a jacksonville parking lot after Mr.Dunn asked the teenager to lower the volume of rap music blasting from their car. Mr.Dunn says, The teen cursed at him and disregarded his request. Prosectors argued that this disrespect engaged Mr.Dunn, who reached for his gun and fired ten shots.
Why this event is relevant:This is relevant because a Mother is getting justice for her son, who was killed by a man for playing loud music.
Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) my feeling towards this are happy because it is fair that the man got charged and put in jail, instead of being not found guilty of a murder he commited of an innocent teen.
Opinion (I think..) I think it took too long for the court system in florida to just finding this man guilty, when he should have been found guilty the year he commited the crime especially in this situation of taken a child life.
Connection (why you chose this article) I chose this article because it seem as though the sytem in florida is improving. Because this case is similar to the, Trayvon Martin Case, a innocent teen was killed. And his killer was found not guilty in court. But instead, This time a man commited the same crime killing a innocent teen, but was founded guilty, this justice should be a good example for all the men out there that think they can just kill innocent teens and get away with it.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title:Victim describes carjacking ordea
Article Date: October 21, 2014

Why this event is relevant: this is relevent because it was something so small that turned into a large thing first, he shouldnt have carjacked the woman any and none of the this would have took place.
Reaction: my feelings towards this is upset because in your testimony you lied and kept denying that he didnt do . it makes me feel said because that could have been or one of my family members in that predicament.
Opinion: in my opinion i think that should get the death penalty or be in jail for life because they commited a crime that couldhave been avoided.
Connection: i choose this because it was interesting and i wanted to know more about this trail what was going to happen to the two mwn.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title:Ferguson turns into tinderbox once again
Article Date: October 21, 2014
Who:The citizens in Ferguson
Where: Ferguson, Missouri
When: October 21, 2014
What happened: Ferguson been protesting for 70 days. They protest in front of the Police Department yelling for the allegation of Officer Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. The streets of Ferguson aren't safe.
Why this event is relevant: This is relevant because the people of Ferguson just want justices for Michael Brown
Reaction: It's sad that Officer Wilson isn't in jail yet.
Opinion: I think the officer should go to jail for life for shooting an innocent boy.
Connection: I chose this article because it's important that everyone knows what's still going on in Ferguson.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title:Man stopped after scaling White House fence
Article Date:Thu October 23, 2014
Who: Dominic Adesanya, White House security
Where: The article doesn’t say but probably outside the town of Kobani.
When: Oct. 22, 2014, Tuesday
What happened: Yesterday evening a man jumped over the fence surrounding the White House which makes this the second time happening in a month. Unlike the first intruder however this one was taken down immediately. Adesanya had a brief scuffle with two dogs from the K9 unit but he was soon overwhelmed, arrested and sent to the hospital.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because this guy could’ve hurt US officials or even the president. It’s important to know that the Secret Service or stopping threats like this because this is a national security matter.
Reaction: I feel as though the Secret Service has stepped their game up. The last man who climbed over the fence made it inside the White House with a switchblade and 800 rounds of ammunition which is very dangerous. Even though Dominic Adesanya was reported of having no weapons the Secret Service should still be aggressive as a message to any others trying to do the same
Opinion: I think that the Secret Service has made a great attempt to be more responsive and attentive since the last incident. This proves that putting attention on an event can make a change which is what we should do for other events.
Connection: I chose this article because the safety of political figures is important and this event is basically like a status report of how well the national security has improved.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title: The presence of marijuana in Michael Brown’s system tells us little about why he died
Article Date: October 23, 2014
Who: Michael Brown
Where: Ferguson, Missouri
When: October 10, 2014 to present
What happened: On Oct. 10th this year a 18 year old black male was innocently killed by a police officer in the South which is notorious for racial tensions. There has been many debates on rather his death was unjust or not. A new argument for those who’ve seen his death as just has been found but it’s quite controversial. An autopsy and toxicology on Michael Brown says he had traces of THC, the main chemical of marijuana, in his system during the time of his death. This supports the argument that Michael Brown’s death wasn’t unlawful because he had high levels of THC which caused him to have an impaired thinking, hallucinations and a violent behavior. Doctors disprove this argument however because although marijuana does cause impaired thinking it doesn’t cause hallucinations or a great spike in violence.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because the issue in Ferguson has caused national unrest and even foreign countries commented on it. Michael Brown has put attention on policing and how officers use their authority which may cause changes across the United States.
Reaction: I am disappointed that people are still trying to slander Michael’s name and are hindering the process of justice. There is more evidence on the officer who killed Michael Brown than evidence for the reason behind Michael Brown’s death which is ridiculous.
Opinion: I think that all of the conflict in Ferguson can all be easily settled by allowing justice to take place. The government should sentence the officer behind the gun and checking and balancing local law enforcements.
Connection: I chose this article because the conflict in Ferguson has been pushed out of the media by other headlines like Ebola or ISIS and people should still be keeping up with the issue because we need to make sure America is right before we get involved with other affairs.
Rahiim,
DeleteVery insightful post and great use of your wide vocabulary. I agree with you that we need to allow the justice system to work. In the meantime, perhaps all police departments could examine how they proactively prevent abuse of power. And let us not forget what this story can teach us.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title: Man charged with abduction with intent to defile in case of missing U.Va. student
Article Date: September 23, 2014
Who: Police, Forensic Science Investigators, Jesse Leroy Matthew, and Hannah Graham.
Where: University of Virginia
When: September 23, 2014
What happened: This article is about a mid-age African-American man who abducts a college girl. This was not his first time Matthew came in contact with violating the laws. Hannah and her friends were out having dinner and on their way to their second party out of the night, out of campus. Unfortunately, Hannah didn't stay with her friends at the party. Eventually she tried to find her way on campus. She ends up getting lost, finding the nearest store away from her. Jesse Matthew and Hannah ended up at the same place, a bar. The police thinks it is him because he was employed at the university and since he knows every entrance t the school, he was able to trespass in 2010. Also, Forensic Scientist stated that he could be the criminal for the other victims cases that went missing at the same college.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because its an example of why it is not safe to be walking around at night time because there are crazy people in this world that do the most dumbest things for the most outrageous things.
Reaction: I felt empathy for the college girl that let a stranger to take just because she tried to go back to campus by herself after coming from a party
Opinion - I think this should have never happened. If Hannah would have came back with her friends and not by herself, then she would have never end up being lost. If her friends would have went back on campus with her then, being missing for a whole month would have never been sick.
Connection- I chose this article because one of my family members talked to t to me about it. Explaining how I should be careful at night and check my surroundings if I'm ever alone.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title: ISIS Halloween costumes are what we need to fight the Islamic State
Article Date: October 23, 2014
Who: ISIS and Americans
Where: The United States
When: This article is suggesting that this should happen on Halloween
What happened: A writer for the Washington Post suggests that America could beat ISIS not only on the ground with armed battles but back at home with costumes. Dressing up as ISIS is taunting and humiliating. ISIS is usually always about presentation which is apparent through their propaganda and beheading videos. Doing this will embarrass them and make them look silly which ultimately discredits the real ISIS.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because it involves Halloween, an American holiday, and how the Americans who’s not fighting overseas can help defeat ISIS
Reaction: I feel as though this is a great way to combat ISIS because misrepresenting what they do is aggravating on their side.
Opinion: I think that people should actually take this into consideration. This might be quite controversial but anything to slow down the proliferation of ISIS is a good thing.
Connection: I chose this article because everybody always talk about ISIS and what their doing but they rarely talk about what we do. The only thing they hear is airstrikes to fight ISIS but this is an interesting way to fight ISIS.
I see this backfiring, big time.

When: Doesn't say.
What happened: The White House held a meeting on how to control the outbreak of Ebola.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because the outbreak of Ebola is starting to effect many people in the United States and is killing many people.
Reaction: My reaction is that I'm relieved that the US is starting to come together to find a way to stop Ebola from spreading.
Opinion: My opinion is that they should close the boarders. By that I mean that nobody is allowed to leave the country and nobody is allowed to come in. This will stop the disease from coming here and infecting other people.
Connection I chose this article because it is affecting many people today and we should be protecting our people and doing something about it.

Reaction: My reaction to this is that this man is seriously crazy. You can get more years for attempted murder than insurance fraud.

ReplyDeleteTitle: Ebola Vaccines Trials Planned For December
This event took place October 24, 2014. This happened at a news confrence in Geneva. News was spread about trials for a ebola vaccine planned for December after a meeting with government officials, public health workers, and drug companies disscused the terms for these trials. There are two vaccines to be tested to see if they work. They will be tested on volunteer care workers, burials of ebola patients and the family members of people around those who are sickened with ebola virus. This is relevant becuase unlike past outbreaks of ebola virus this one proves to spread around all until contained and stopped. My reaction to this is that its comforting to know that their are being initiatives taken to cure ebola but the other side is what if these vaccines don't work. My opion is that they should do these trials but also close borders to contain virus as they should to stop ebola from spreading. My connection is that when I first researched ebola I thought it wouldn't have been that serious of a problem because its only been seen in foreign countries and contained to have the virus die out. I just hope these vaccines work soon to not have an worldwide outbreak of ebola.
