Article Title: The title of my article is Obama strikes back at Christie on Ebola.
Article Date: My article took place on Tuesday October 28, 2014.
Who: President Barrack Obama, Governor Chris Christie, and Democrat Andrew Cuomo, and Nurse Hickox were all who are involved.
Where: This event happened in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and in the far country of Sierra Leone.
When: This occurred last Tuesday. More specifically, October 28 of this year.
What happened:New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently took a trip to African country Sierra Leone. Upon his return, President Obama questions his methods of dealing with the spreading virus known as Ebola. Obama believes that Christie’s quarantine policies are solely based upon fear, which will cause the African scientists to produce less work on the eradication of Ebola. Christie rebuttals by saying that the inconvenience of one person is greatly outweighed by the safety of the public. Andrew Cuomo of New York also stood by Christie, but as Obama’s opinions and reasons unfolded, he quickly stood back. However, Christie stayed strong. He believe that his quarantine policies will protect his people in a positive light that will benefit all, while Obama believes that it puts more fear into all people, and discourages scientists in Africa.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because it shows the battle between safety and morals while dealing with the lives of innocent people. It also raises the question of when do you go completely based on facts and fears, or do you always bring morals and ethics with you?
Reaction: I feel unsure and unsafe because if two well known and well respected members of government who has a say for us, the fatal disease can spread beyond control.
Opinion: I believe all members of government should sit down and think of an action plan that puts public safety and their well-beings in good hands.
Connection: I can connect this to the abolishment of slavery. Just as it was the north against the south based on belief, it will soon be state versus state based on belief. However, this time, millions of lives are hanging in the balance.

Article Title: U.S. beefs up security at federal buildings
Article Date: Updated on Tuesday, October 28, 2014
Who: The Department of Homeland Security and their Secretary Jeh Johnson were involved, including Canada’s government.
Where: The attacks were in Canada, but reporters are breaking the news all over the U.S.
When: Last week were when the attacks happened and Secretary Jeh Johnson declared a statement on Tuesday.
What Happened: There were two assaults that occurred last week on Canada’s government which were due to terrorists killing members of the Parliament. Now that security departments have got on hold of those attacks, Secretary Jeh Johnson commanded tighter security for over 9,500 federal government buildings and their 4.1 million visitors. The new enhancement of the security measures were performed to be a preventative shield to those attacks. Most of the new security measures have been recommended for U.S. government buildings, because they are protected by the Federal Protective Service. That service faces threats from terrorist organizations, due to their ability to always make changes quickly.
Why is this event relevant: This event is relevant, because terrorist organizations may try to attack U.S. government buildings several times. It is giving the U.S. a heads up to tighten security.
Reaction: When I watched the video of this article, I was shocked to see how close violence could get inside the parliament.
Opinion: I think the commands of getting more security is best for all government buildings.
Connection: I chose this article because it was all over the news and its important for all federal government buildings to know about.

Article Title: Kurdish women a force to be reckoned with for ISIS
    Article Date:Wed October 29, 2014
Who: The female militants of YPG and ISIS
    Where: Syria
When:The fight against ISIS has been going on since 2013
What happened: A large group of females has joined the move to destroy ISIS. Most of these women are victims of ISIS in one way or another. It could be them physically being hurt to their husbands getting killed. They aren’t only fighting ISIS on the battlefield but they’re protecting their villages and people at home such as Christians or Shiites Muslims.
Why this event is relevant:This event is relevant because it involves the terrorist group that the US is fighting. This is also relevant because this reports support we’re receiving to fight ISIS
Reaction: I feel that this is great for not only the US and other ISIS enemies but for females in the Middle East. This makes me proud of being a girl and of girls in general because to those they are protecting they are seen as superheroes.
Opinion: ISIS is starting to get ganged up on and this might lead to ISIS getting defeated. I also think that if girls in other nations in the Middle East hear about this they’ll get inspired and this can end the inequality in the Middle East.
Connection: I chose this article because ISIS is basically a global villain and news of them being attacked is good.

Article Title: Weed decriminalized in Philly: will other cities follow its lead?
    Article Date: 10/25/2014
    Who: Philadelphians
Where: This happened in Philadelphia, PA
When: The weed decriminalization happened on October 20, 2014
What happened: Theorists think that the decriminalization of marijuana will affect the whole country. This act made Philadelphia the largest city to decriminalize weed. It is speculated that other cities might follow. This issue is confusing though because weed is illegal throughout all of Pennsylvania and it seems it won’t change but in Philadelphia it isn’t outlawed. Anyway this may create a change in America and Philadelphia can be able to put itself with Colorado.
Why this event is relevant: This is relevant because this can possibly change the course of US history and how state capitols interact with their major cities.
Reaction: I feel as though this is good because weed isn’t as serious as murder so there shouldn’t be a reason to put smokers next to killers. I feel as though that doing this over a plant is crazy when alcohol has a greater risk.
Opinion: I think that fining and jailing marijuana users is a hassle and ruins jobs for otherwise great, wise and smart people. Having a record can ruin the odds of someone finding a decent job to support themselves and whoever they’re taking care of. I think Philly is doing great for doing this because it can be another place for change like it was in the 1770’s when it played a role in the American Revolution.
Connection: I chose this article because this event is happening here and I wanted to see new stories instead of Ebola and ISIS.

    1. Great connection! And thank you for changing the topic. I must admit I'm growing a little tired of seeing Ebola articles. Remember this article, we will come back to this issue in class later in the year to connect to "The New Jim Crow." Mass incarceration is a problem in this nation, and this offense contribute a lot to the growing prison population.

Article Title: Strike likely, SEPTA union leader says, but not soon

    Article Date: October 28, 2014

Who: The people involved are the Septa Union

    Where: This happened in Philadelphia

    When: Monday, October 27, 2014

What happened: The leader of the Septa Union is saying that a strike among Septa is more than likely to happen. Willie Brown says that talks between SEPTA and the union aren’t productive and are pushing each other apart which is pushing a strike. He said it is possible for them to strike as early as Tuesday but thats probably not going to happen. If they do strike however, riders will be notified a day before.

Why this event is relevant: This is relevant because this affects the economy and educational systems of Philadelphia because millions rely on SEPTA everyday to get to where they need to be

Reaction: I feel worried because I need Septa to get to school and other places and without I’m out of luck. I wonder how poor schools in Philly and schools in general are going to adapt to this.

Opinion: I think that Septa workers are being greedy because they already make more than other jobs in Philly. I understand why theyre upset but they don’t understand how important they are to citizens and this can mess up the day to day lifestyle here.

Connection: I chose this article because this can affect us and pose a bigger concern than other things right now.

Article title:Maine Nurse Wont Submig to Ebola Quarantine,Lawyer says"
Article Date:This article was published on October 29,2014.
Who:A nurse and officials are involved in this article.
Where:The nurse lives in Maine but contracted the virus in West Africa.
When: This event happened in the begging of November.
What happened:A Maine nurse went to West Aftica to help with the patients of ebola. When arriving back to Africa she refuses to go under qurantine for 21 days in case symptoms show of ebola.Officals put this into place so that people thats unaffected by this virus, won't come in to contact with a person who may have ebola. The nurse from Maine disagrees and doesn't think she should be quarantined she thinks that its unfair and unjust.Because of this officials are worried that she might come in contact with a person who has ebola, and they are forcing her to go under quarantine.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because she came from africa treating ebola patients and refuses not to go in to quarantine and this puts others in jeperody.
Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes)
The burse should defintley go into isolation and not come into contact with a regular person that hasnt been infected by this virus its whats best for her and the people.
Opinion (I think..)I think that the nurse is making foolish decisions and isnt fully understanding why the officials need to put her in quarantine just for 21 days, just to be safe.
Connection (why you chose this article)
I choose this article because I came across the title and it intrigued me that someone who's been in direct contact with an ebola patient will have to be forced to go into quarantine.

Article Title: Mary Landrieu’s Challenge: Turn Out The Black Vote

Article Date: October 30th, 2014 is when this article was published.

Who: This article mentions Mary Landrieu who is a democratic senator and President Barack Obama.

Where: This article takes place mainly in Louisiana.

When: This event takes place during this month (October 2014).

What happened: In 2008, while Obama was first running for president, he lost to John McCain in the state of Louisiana, only getting 40 percent of the votes while McCain got 59 percent. Obama won 10 out of the 64 parishes, and in each one of them, the population was at least 45 percent black. But, Mary Landrieu won against John Kennedy, who is a republican. She received 52 percent of the votes and he received 46 percent. She won 38 out of the 64 parishes, which was way higher than Obama. That year, Obama won 94 percent of African American votes, but only 14 percent of white votes but Landrieu won 96 percent of African American votes and 33 percent of white votes. Again, Landrieu ended up with more votes than Obama. But now, as she runs for senate again, people are wondering if whether or not she will still win over as many blacks as she did when she had the help of President Obama. Landrieu will have to figure out a way to win over the predominantly African American parishes in Louisiana again.

Why this event is relevant: This is relevant because it is talking about the elections, which are apart of politics and government.

Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes): I feel like this is weird because I don’t know how Obama being on the ballot helped her so much in Louisiana in 2008 if he lost a lot of the votes in Louisiana.

Opinion (I think..): I think she should worry about winning over the bigger states with more people in them rather than focusing on just Louisiana. She should focus on all the southern states and the more populated states like New York and Pennsylvania that have lots of blacks living there too.

Connection (why you chose this article): I chose this article because when I saw politics I already knew I could do it for a current event, and I chose it because I wanted to see about the racial issue and how it’s affecting her votes.

Article Title: New York mayor reassures the city on Ebola
Article Date: This article was published on October 26, 2014
Who: Craig Allen Spencer, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Dr. Mary Bassett, Pedro Vanegas, and Kenneth Clarke are people mentioned in this article.
Where: This event took place in New York.
When: This event happened on October 23, 2014.
What happened: While reading this article it was discovered that Ebola has reached New York. The governor told the citizens of New York that everything was going to be alright and that they had nothing to worry about. Citizens felt like they weren’t safe because of a man brining the virus back from West Africa. When the government officials discovered that he had the virus his home got quarantined. Many neighbors of his apartment building were worried that they might get the virus too. They were assured that would not be true. Pamphlets were passed out to the citizens so that they could learn more about the virus and possible ways to prevent it. Lastly, it was said that people that are on flights coming back from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone were going to get interviewed and checked to see if there is any reason for mandatory quarantine.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant due to the fact that Ebola is a very serious virus that people should take caution of since it is spreading rapidly and making its way closer and closer to Philadelphia.
Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) This is scary, since this virus is killing off so many people so quickly, it is hard to tell how soon the virus could action reach where we live.
Opinion (I think..) The government should stay on top of this virus to be cautious for citizens.
Connection (why you chose this article) I chose this article because it is a part of something that people are talking about every day.

He also feel as though that Governor Chris Christie is playing these politics out here.the nurse (Kaci Hickox) who volunteers in sierra Leone was what's quarantine due to the fact that they said she had a fever but was later relieved because she showed no signs or symptoms of Ebola. Many people don't like the fact that health care workers have to be quarantined for 21 days is unnecessary if they don't have the illness because it means they can't go volunteer West of Africa. Look of Chris Christie said that its only for adults patients who shows signs and symptom of evilness not just let a public to be asserted from everybody else to be in quarantine for nothing.

Reactions : shock that he was the first to survive Ebola in to give his speech about how Chris Christie is really feel about the health care policy of being in quarantine.

Title: ISIS on recruiting foreigners and the online drive to stop it.
    Article Date: September 15, 2014
    By. Rima Marrough
Who: ISIS networking to get recruiters.
When: This event happened Monday, September 15, 2014

Where : The incident was reported to take place in Syria which later spread worldwide.

What happened : The extremist terrorist group ISIS is rapidly expanding. They're recruiting from the Western Muslim societies.Unlike other terrorist groups ISIS techniques seems to differ the others. Instead of searching for recruits in their region they took a much broader approach and did different countries . Which seems to be working. ISIS is not dumb, they want their recruits to have an educational background and a military background.

Why it's Relevant: This is relevant because it is showing how everything in the world is connected. Think about it this all started in Syria. Now god forbid but it's spreading worldwide. Also because of ISIS it's bringing our allies closer but on the negative side we don't know who's really our enemies. Because of social media ISIS is spreading and if we can stop this movement we can stop any future attacks on US soil. Also it is sad that somebody would even behead a person how sadistic do you have to be. ISIS members are very intelligent that they networking on the internet to find hopefuls. It's very simple that you can go on Ask.com to get recruited. However US counterterrorism group found a way to monitor ISIS social media skills in an act to stop them.

Reaction: When I read this article it made me sick that people are living inside countries plotting to hurt their own citizens. Its just stupid. Also that a group of people our plotting against U.S. but live in our country. You also can't trust anyone and it's sad . It's sad that because we have the technology doesn't mean we're one step ahead of them.

Opinion: I think it's revenge for what the US did to their leader Osama Bin Laden. I also believe that their may be another attack sadly because ISIS is expanding.

Connection: I chose this topic because this is the main issues that be on the news and can possibly happen on our soil.

When:This event is taken place in today's society.
What happened: ISIS threatened the Yazidi religious minority that if they didn't convert to Islam something bad would happen. They also violated them and took their jewelry, money and cellphones. ISIS took all the men older than ten and shot them. It was different for women though, the young girls were separated from the older women and sent to the city of Mosul. The ISIS men would come and pick three to four girls to take home with them. The girls were exposed to sexual and physical violence and it was sad. They were treated as slaves and were raped. There were months that went by before the ISIS men were repoorted for this behavior in the middle east.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevent because of the physical and sexual violence.

Article Title: The title of the articled used is “Hate Crime Bill Approved in Philly After Same- Sex Attack.
Article Date: This article was last updated on Thursday, October 30, 2014.
Who: Mayor Michael Nutter, City Council and Councilman Jim Kenney are involved.
Where: This is taking place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
When: The bill was approved last Thursday, however, this event is still taking place.
What happened: The Philadelphia city council has recently passed a bill, to add taunting of an individual based on their sexual orientation as a hate crime. Last Thursday, the bill gained approval. However, now Mayor Michael Nutter has approximately two weeks to sign the bill, that was recently approved. This law was passed due to the recent hate crime that took place in center city, when a couple of the same sex was attacked. The attackers were unable to be charged, because taunting of same-sex was not considered a hate crime, by the state of Pennsylvania.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant, because this means that a new bill has been approved in the city of Philadelphia. In addition, people of the same-sex are essentially more protected by this new bill that has been passed.
Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) I am actually surprised this was not covered under the hate crime umbrella. Regardless of one’s sexual orientation no one should be attacked because of their beliefs, or for what they like/love.
Opinion (I think..) I think the approval of this bill is long overdue, and this should have been covered under the hate crime umbrella.
Connection (why you chose this article) I chose this article because I feel like everyone should be comfortable in the skin that they are in. They should not have to fear being attacked because of who they love. Regardless if one loves the same-sex or the opposite sex they should not be attacked because of that.

    Article Date: October 29th, 2014
    Who: The United States
    Where:The United States
    When:October 29, 2014
What happened: Yesterday The United States had one of the highest incarceration rate on earth. Nearly 2.3 million people have been put in jail. Alot of the other people are either on parole or probation. One in every 20 people in the United States are always under supervision. This was a major increase in the 1980 and beyond. A good government would be trying to fix these issues. These issues mainly happen in the United States. But in other countries as well. There are also many teens in this situation which needs to be resolved in a better manner. Which is why prisons needs to be shrinked.
Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because it has to do with people getting arrested and getting locked up and it has to do with the government.
Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) My reaction is just wow. It was very interesting to see the stats of how often someone is put in jail.
Opinion (I think..) I think the government should try and do a better job of fighting off these certain problems.

    Article Date: October 30, 2014
Who: Tim Cook and Vitaly Milonov
    Where: St. Petersberg, Russia
    When: Today
What happened: Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, came out stating that he’s gay. This is great for the LGBT community because they have the support of the CEO from a top company. This made him the only publicly gay owner in a company. A Russian politician, thats anti-LGBT, isn’t happy though. He wants Tim banned from Russia for life. He said that he doesn’t want him there because he can spread diseases like Ebola, Aids, and gonorrhea.
Why this event is relevant: This is relevant because it involves the gays and their movement across the globe.
Reaction: I feel like this is absurd because banning a man from a country is just foolish. Apple is a popular phone in Russia and banning the man behind it is stupid.
Opinion: I think this is all some type of cover up to conceal the fact that Russia is anti homosexual. Milonov gives science behind his reasoning but thats all a lie which is noticeable because he is anti LGBT. I think that a powerful country shouldn’t be homophobic.

Article Date: This article was published on October 28, 2014.

Who: This article involves President Barack Obama.

Where: The situation in this article takes place in the United States.

When: This event is currently taking place on final days before midterm elections .

What happened: President Barack Obama decided that he will travel to states in that he won his election in to bring up the job approval rate . Many republicans do not agree with what he is doing but obama knows that he can do it . He is making sure to stay away from the states where he lost big time . This is a last minute decision right before the final days of midterm elections. Obama made it his stop of his rally on tuesday in Wisconsin.

Why this event is relevant: This event is relevant because our president is making big moves and everyone should be aware of what he is doing. It’s final days before midterm elections so its a must the people are aware about what is going on and how things are being carried out.

Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) : My feelings towards this article is pretty over protective. I want people to leave my president alone and let him do what he feels in his heart is right. He was elected president for a reason.

Opinion (I think..) : I think people should leave President Barack Obama alone. He can do whatever he feels is right at anytime he wants. Who cares how late of a decision he’s making ? He’s still trying to make a changed in the political world. He’s the President, not anyone else in the United States.

Connection (why you chose this article) : I chose this article because I love my president and seeing his name on things automatically makes me interested. Plus, I like to be informed on what is going on in the political world. I feel as a high school student looking forward to taking AP history next year that it is important to know about everything going in the United States. I strongly support President Barack Obama and every decision he makes.

Frein may be given the death penalty. Frein was one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Frein was charged with several different charges.

Reaction (describe your feelings or attitudes) I was surprised at how long it took to find him. I understand that things may take time but I don’t believe that there was no way he was not seen by anybody. Frein had to have some type of trying or had been planning this because all of the rifles and kits, belonging to Frein, that were found.
Opinion (I think..) I think that Frein should be given all charges that he is receiving and should be sentenced to the death penalty. You cannot kill someone and expect to walk the streets safely.

    1. Great article choice. This brings up a larger question about what are high schools doing to prepare students to manage their finances and being empowered to make good financial choices when it comes to attending college. There's no reason why money should limit one's opportunities.
